Panel Discussion on Construction Disputes and Dispute Resolution

A panel discussion with three eminent personalities, Mr. Chandrasena, Professor Weddikkara and Arct. Lalith de Silva, at the head table followed the award ceremony. The topic of the day was “Construction Disputes and Dispute Resolution – Past, Present and Future”.

Professor Weddikkara discussed how the Clients’ point of view regarding the disputes and dispute resolution has changed over the period of time while Arct. Lalith de Silva discussed it from the Architects’ point of view. Mr. Chandrasena described briefly the major developments of dispute resolution in construction. Various questions were raised and discussed. One of the key points that highlighted was that the errors in contract documents are often responsible for the occurrence of disputes. Price competition for the consultancy services and consortium practices without qualified Quantity Surveyors were identified as some of the root causes. This is an important area for Quantity Surveyors to further explore, and search and formulate solutions.
