Mr. H. D. Chandrasena, Professor Chitra Weddikkara and Arct. Lalith de Silva awarded with the Honorary Membership of QSAA

As an honour for the enormous contribution towards the Department of Building Economics, and the QS Alumni as its former students, the membership decided to award Mr. H. D. Chandrasena, Professor Chitra Weddikkara, and Arct. Lalith de Silva with the Honorary Membership of the Quantity Surveying Alumni Association. We had the pleasure of formally presenting the tokens for the award of honorary membership at a memorable ceremony held at Berjaya Mount Royal Hotel on 31st March 2010.

Panel Discussion on Construction Disputes and Dispute Resolution

A panel discussion with three eminent personalities, Mr. Chandrasena, Professor Weddikkara and Arct. Lalith de Silva, at the head table followed the award ceremony. The topic of the day was “Construction Disputes and Dispute Resolution – Past, Present and Future”.

Professor Weddikkara discussed how the Clients’ point of view regarding the disputes and dispute resolution has changed over the period of time while Arct. Lalith de Silva discussed it from the Architects’ point of view. Mr. Chandrasena described briefly the major developments of dispute resolution in construction. Various questions were raised and discussed. One of the key points that highlighted was that the errors in contract documents are often responsible for the occurrence of disputes. Price competition for the consultancy services and consortium practices without qualified Quantity Surveyors were identified as some of the root causes. This is an important area for Quantity Surveyors to further explore, and search and formulate solutions.

Questions and Answers Session: Price Fluctuation Formula

The Questions & Answers Session of Quantity Surveying Alumni Association was held on Thursday 21st January 2010 at College of Quantity Surveying, Colombo. The thematic topic was “Price Fluctuation Formula – is it effective?” The discussions were very fruitful where solutions for most of the issues were identified while few more questions were identified that requires some research.

Participants were of the opinion that such discussions are important to assure the competitive skills, professionalism and integrity. They also appreciated Vindyani’s presence as she had come all the way from Hambantota, and recognized the need of removing the barrier of distance in sharing of knowledge. A group mailing list was proposed and members will soon receive invitations to join this group.
